Kayak
Fishing and Kayak Fly Fishing in Khao Sok
Our
favorite freshwater kayak fishing destination is Khao Sok National Park.
The 165 square kilometer reservoir is stocked with Mekong Giant Catfish,
many
different species of carps and barbs, jungle perch,
gourami and others.
The Cheow Lan
Reservoir is full of dead trees and Milfoil weed is all over the place
too. This means that heavy line is needed. Horsing big snakehead fish
out of the weeds requires a high pound test too.
Giant Snake-head Fish
Our
absolute favorite freshwater fish to catch is the Giant Snake-head
Fish. It's aggressive, nasty, mean and tasty. We practice catch and
release most of the time. We keep a fish every once in a while.
We catch them
on topwater lure, crankbait, spinners, jigs, soft bait and flyfishing
poppers. We have caught some smaller snake-head fish on Klouser Minnows,
Muddler Minnows, Woolly Bugs and other flies. Bite-proof leaders are
a 'must'.
They get up to 9 kg, though
most of the fish we catch are from 2 to 6 kg. But, you never know
what you'll catch in Khao Sok. The reservoir was flooded in 1980,
so there are some huge Giant Snakehead Fish in there.
March through August are
the best months for catching Giant Snake-head Fish.
Blotched Snake-head Fish
The Blotched Snakehead
Fish doesn't get a big as the Giant Snakehead Fish, but it's
still agressive and fun to catch.

Grey Featherback
These fish can get
to over 10 - 12 kg and they hit live bait best, but they can
be caught on minnow-like lures as well. |
Common Sheatfish
These guys can get
big... up to 30 kg. Spinners and spoons work, but live bait
is the most effective. |
Nile Tilapia
In
our opinion, the most fun way to catch this fish is on topwater
lures or better yet, by flyfishing. Most of the fish we catch
are in the 1 to 2 kg range.

Golden Barb
Golden Barbs, Tinfoil
Barbs and others are plentiful in Thailand. Though live bait
and smelly bait works well, they do hit flies and small lures
as well.

 There
are many nice fishing parks that are stocked with exotic species, most
seem to be from the Amazon region. Arapaima, Arowana,
Pacu, Peacock Bass and others seem
to be in a lot of lakes. There are a few lakes that are stocked with
Barramundi, a fish that is originally found in Australian
waters.

Fly
fishing from a kayak... it's a bit tricky, but once you've figured
it out, it's a lot of fun and very productive. We also have one
sit-on-top kayak as well as a lovely wooden canoe. |

Yes,
Alligator Gar will take a fly. |

that wears better clothes than I do; I envy nobody but him, and him
only, that catches more fish than I do." Izaak Walton
